A Study in Contrast and Continuity
In the heart of rural Crete, where the White Mountains meet the lush valleys of Apokoronas, stands a residence that bridges two worlds. Stone, Light, & Line is the thoughtful restoration of a traditional village house, reimagined as a sanctuary for modern living without erasing the whispers of its past.
At the core of this revival is a biophilic approach that reconnects the home to its rugged Cretan surroundings. We transformed every window into a living frame for the olive groves and sky, ensuring a constant visual connection to nature. By pairing original limestone with raw timber and polished concrete, we created a tactile, haptic experience that celebrates natural textures. This sensory harmony extends to the reimagined avli (courtyard), where a seamless indoor-outdoor flow blurs the boundary between the cool stone interior and the sun-drenched landscape.
A Respectful Transformation
This renovation project in the Aspro, Apokoronas region of Crete, titled Biophilic Design: Living with the Landscape, transforms a two-level, 120.00 sq.m residence into a sanctuary that bridges traditional Mediterranean soul with modern clarity.
By prioritizing the “built” and the “natural” as a single entity, the design utilizes local limestone, reclaimed timber, and lime-based plasters to mirror the textures of the surrounding olive groves and the White Mountains.
The architecture acts as a sensory filter, where large-scale openings and strategic glass transitions dissolve the boundaries between the interior and the rugged scrubland, allowing the home to breathe naturally with the coastal breeze.
The spatial configuration is intelligently split to balance grounded social areas with elevated private vistas. The lower level serves as an anchor, where the kitchen and living spaces flow directly onto garden terraces, inviting the scents of wild thyme and the rhythmic play of dappled light into the heart of the home. In contrast, the upper level functions as a lookout, framing panoramic views of the White Mountains to reinforce a sense of “prospect” and calm.
This vertical journey ensures that every square meter of the 120.00 sq.m footprint feels expansive, connected to the horizon rather than confined by walls.
We didn't just want to fix a house; we wanted to wake it up. By stripping away the clutter and focusing on the essential elements of light and volume, the stone finally has room to breathe.
The Vision: Honoring the Bones
The original structure—a series of interconnected stone volumes—was a testament to Cretan vernacular architecture. Our goal was not to “modernize” by replacement, but to amplify the existing character through a Minimalist-Modernist lens.
The Stone: We painstakingly restored the original masonry, utilizing local techniques to ensure the thermal mass of the structure remains a natural climate control system.
The Light: By strategically introducing large-scale glass apertures, we transformed once-dark interiors into airy, sun-drenched galleries.
The Line: Sharp, clean architectural lines provide a geometric counterpoint to the organic, irregular textures of the ancient stone.
Biophilic Design: Living with the Landscape
The core of this renovation is the seamless integration of the “built” and the “natural.” In a region as sensory as Apokoronas—with its silver-green olive groves and limestone outcrops—biophilic design ensures that the home acts as a bridge rather than a barrier.
Blurring Boundaries: Large-scale openings and strategically placed glass transitions dissolve the line between the interior and the Mediterranean scrubland.
Natural Materiality: The use of local stone, reclaimed timber, and lime-based plasters mirrors the textures found in the surrounding White Mountains (Lefka Ori).
Thermal Harmony: By utilizing the thermal mass of original stone walls and introducing cross-ventilation, the home breathes naturally, reducing the need for mechanical cooling.
The Palette: An Honest Dialogue
We approach color not as a surface application, but as an extension of form. This curated selection is a study in restrained organicism. It balances the tectonic gravity of ancient limestone with the tactile softness of raw linen and the living depth of olive. It is a quiet, respectful framework designed to let the original architecture breathe.
This neutral-driven palette is engineered to honour the historic bones of the property. The mineral-rich tones of Limestone and Warm Linen provide an expansive, light-filled foundation that mirrors the original masonry.
These are grounded by the deep, atmospheric Olive Thread and Stone Shadow, which add sophisticated complexity, introducing natural depth that bridges the gap between the antique and the cutting-edge.
Reawakening a Heritage Residence
Our approach to this renovation was guided by a single principle: reverence. We didn’t want to just build a house inside an old structure; we wanted to create a home that grew from it. By stripping back layers of previous interventions, we revealed the “bones” of the property—the hand-carved limestone and rugged masonry that have stood for generations.
The “remaining stones” of the original footprint were treated as the primary DNA of the design. Rather than replacing weathered sections, we painstakingly restored them, allowing the natural patina and imperfections to act as a living gallery.
The Open-Plan Kitchen: A Grounded Culinary Heart
The heart of the residence is an expansive open-plan kitchen and dining area that serves as a masterclass in material dialogue. Defined by the rugged texture of the home’s original stone walls, the space feels deeply rooted in the history of this residence.
Overhead, dark oak wooden beams traverse the ceiling, providing a rhythmic, structural warmth that contrasts beautifully with the large, comfortable layout. The kitchen features custom oak cabinetry and is dominated by a generous opening that spills directly out toward the garden.
This seamless transition ensures that the scents of the Mediterranean landscape and the soft Cretan light are as much a part of the room as the architecture itself.
A Sanctuary in Stone
This renovation masterfully balances rugged heritage with refined modernism, centering on an original dry-stack stone wall that provides a tactile, historic backdrop to the space. The design integrates a seamless wet-room shower with minimalist glass and chrome fixtures, while a bespoke natural oak vanity runs beneath a deep-set window to offer a warm, functional contrast to the cool masonry.
By pairing the raw textures of the old stone residence with clean architectural lines and a soft, neutral palette, the room achieves a “warm minimalist” aesthetic that feels both ancient and cutting-edge. It is a sophisticated example of how to honor a building’s original soul while providing high-end contemporary comfort.
