Village House Full Transformation & Redesign
Apokoronas, Tsivaras, Chania. Crete / 2023
Located in Apokoronas, this project involves the complete renovation and spatial redesign of a 180.00 sq.m two-storey residence. The architectural objective was to integrate a modern aesthetic without erasing the building’s traditional character. This was achieved through a meticulous selection of materials and a total reconfiguration of the interior layout.
Materiality and Exterior Design
The exterior identity of the house is defined by the extensive use of terracotta. By applying terracotta to both the exterior walls and the roof tiles, the design preserves the traditional Cretan silhouette while providing a textured, contemporary finish. The residence is set within a large garden featuring ancient olive trees and a 45.00 sq.m swimming pool, creating a private outdoor space that respects the local environment.
Modernity through Texture
The design language of this renovation is articulated through a curated palette of earthy, organic tones, specifically chosen to bridge the gap between rugged Cretan craftsmanship and refined modern minimalism.
Linen Beige establishes the interior foundation, acting as a luminous canvas that maximizes natural light and fosters a sense of airy, expansive comfort. This is balanced by Rustic Brown, which serves as a tactile echo of the traditional terracotta utilized for the exterior masonry and roofing.
To elevate the functional heart of the home, Elegant Gold introduces a layer of sophisticated warmth to the modern kitchen and interior accents, imparting a subtle yet unmistakable sense of quiet luxury.
The integration with the landscape is finalized by Scandinavian Moss Green. This deep, muted hue anchors the 180.00 sq.m residence within its natural context by mirroring the distinctive silver-green foliage of the surrounding mature olive trees. The resulting aesthetic is one of timeless harmony—a home that feels deeply rooted in its heritage, yet entirely refreshed for contemporary living.
Interior Reconfiguration & Spatial Evolution
The interior was comprehensively reimagined to prioritize a fluid connection between natural light and ergonomic comfort. By stripping away redundant structures, the new layout fosters an environment that feels both expansive and intentionally curated.
The Lower Level: The ground floor is anchored by a kitchen and dining suite defined by “modern simplicity.” This space achieves a rare balance between high-end functionality and heritage; the deliberate continuation of terracotta tiling from the exterior into the living heart of the home provides a tactile, grounding element. This material bridge ensures that even the most contemporary fixtures feel warm and connected to the building’s history.
The Upper Level: Representing a total spatial metamorphosis, the second floor was completely cleared of its original, fragmented layout. In its place, we engineered two voluminous, sun-drenched bedrooms. These private sanctuaries were meticulously optimized for airflow and light, offering a tranquil retreat that maximizes every square meter of the 180.00 sq.m footprint.
