Unit 402: Urban Dwelling Intervention in Chania City
Apokoronas, Vamos, Chania. Crete / 2023
Unit 402 represents a surgical architectural response to the density of Chania’s city center. Conceived as an “Urban Dwelling Intervention,” this 75 sq.m residence on the second floor moves away from traditional residential layouts, opting instead for a spatial reconfiguration that prioritizes light penetration and volumetric fluidity.
The project serves as a case study in maximizing the footprint of mid-century urban shells, transforming a standard floor plan into a sophisticated, multi-functional environment that balances private sanctuary with civic connectivity.
The heart of the intervention is the expansive living area, a large-scale social volume that anchors the home. By stripping back non-essential partitions, the second-floor interior is opened to a continuous flow, allowing Mediterranean light to reach deep into the core of the dwelling. This programmatic flexibility is balanced by a private master suite designed for minimalist serenity, providing a necessary thermal and acoustic buffer from the urban pulse outside.
To address the challenges of family density within an urban context, the secondary sleeping quarters feature a high-efficiency vertical “intervention.” This room is engineered to accommodate four children through an innovative, multi-level bunk system.
By utilizing the vertical plane, the design creates a playful yet structured environment where sleeping quarters are stacked and mirrored—essentially allowing for a “quad-occupancy” configuration that maximizes floor area for play and study. This project demonstrates how thoughtful architectural intercessions can revitalize existing urban structures into high-performance, aesthetically resonant living spaces.
Urban Dwelling Intervention in Chania City
From Vision to Volume
To complement the architectural rigor of Unit 402, the ARENCOS Interior Design team followed a holistic, six-stage lifecycle to transform this 75 sq.m shell into a lived-in reality.
Our process—beginning with an initial Meet & Greet and moving through precise Measurement and Design Selections—ensures that the "Urban Intervention" isn't just a conceptual idea, but a functional home tailored to the specific needs of a modern family.
For this project, the team focused on bridging the gap between high-concept architecture and daily comfort.
During the Production and Delivery phases, we prioritized the custom fabrication of the multi-level children's sleeping quarters and the seamless integration of storage within the large living area. The final Grand Reveal showcases a space where every texture and finish has been curated to enhance the building's natural light, resulting in an interior that is as warm and inviting as it is architecturally significant.
